What’s in Store for 2012 – A Look Ahead

Pin It

Ah, another new year… time to turn the page of the book of life and start a new chapter let go of the old and look for the new & exciting. While I’m definitely feeling some of the lingering ickiness of the end of 2011 (let’s face it – it was a tough year for many and it doesn’t seem like it wants to let go just yet), for some reason I can’t shake this feeling that this year is going to be beyond awesome.

I’m sure a lot of that stems from all the great plans I have for ye olde blog. And when I say plans, I mean plans.  I’ve gotten to the point where I feel like I can really help people beyond the fun recipes, tips and charming babble that I’ve shared with you fine folks over the years.  And I’ve decided 2012 is the year to finally turn all my lofty ideas into reality.  Let’s look at a few of them…

PGEW as a Learning Resource…

After almost 3.5 years (!!!) of writing this blog, I’m very proud of what I’ve accomplished.  While I never dreamed it would have the kind of reach that it does, it makes me so happy to know that the recipes & tips I’ve posted have actually helped people cut costs and rediscover (or discover) the joys of cooking.  As new readers come on board and long-time readers keep coming back for more, I want to make PGEW more of a learning resource to help folks gain the skills to channel their inner Poor Girl (so to speak) and make eating well a lifestyle, regardless of budget size.

Over the next six months, I’ll be rolling out two online courses to help address some of the most common questions I get from readers.  Covering shopping tips & philosophies on how to change the way you think about eating on a budget (because let’s face it, there’s still a slight stigma associated with doing so), I’ve designed these to help folks make the most of the site and everything it offers.  One thing is checking out all the great food; it’s quite another to put some of the tips I offer into practice to make all that great food without breaking the bank.  I still get a lot of emails from folks saying they just don’t understand how I do it, so I want to share my knowledge in a way that’s straightforward & accessible to all.  Look for the first of these courses in the next couple of months!

Contests that really get you involved:

Many bloggers like to run contests & giveaways on a regular basis, but I’ve never really been one of those.  While they can be fun, I prefer spending my blog time just writing and creating recipes & other useful content rather than spend a ton of time on product giveaways.  I mean, c’mon – I know what you guys come here for!  :)

Then I realized I’d probably shied away from that sort of thing because it felt like the usual giveaway process wasn’t all that challenging.  Perhaps it’s due to my own closet competitive nature, but I like a contest that involves showing some sort of skill to win one’s prize.  So that’s what we’re going to do in the next few months – PGEW style!  Over the course of the year, I’ll be offering up some interesting challenges that will show off your shopping & cooking savvy – and thou shalt be greatly rewarded for doing so.  Again, I’m not givin’ out any details just yet, but this will be fun.

The Book…

You’ve asked for it for years.  I tried it on a small scale and except for the fact that I could never afford to pay for the cost of printing due to the high demand, it was a pretty hot item.  And now it’s finally coming.   Not right away, but it’s a-comin’.  I don’t have a book deal or anything – that’s still a big dream that I hope gets realized soon.  But I’ve never been one to let the inability to do things the “regular” way stop me from pursuing a goal, so I’m going to make it happen the only way I know how – on my own.  It’s obviously not going to happen overnight, but it’s going to be a real, tangible thing sooner rather than later.  And, as Forrest Gump would say, that’s all I’m gonna say about that.  ;)

* * *

Of course, all of this means I’ll have to devote a significant amount of time to these new endeavors.  So, in order to keep myself organized and still have enough time to write a quality book for all of you, I’ve decided to set an actual publishing schedule (*gulp*)  .  With my hectic, topsy-turvy life it might be hard to stick to at first, but I’m shooting for having regular posts published every Monday & Thursday.  If I have some free time or just can’t wait to share something new with you, I’ll post some extras on other days; but at least you’ll know that every Monday & Thursday, you’ll have fresh PGEW material upon which to feast your eyes.

I have many more plans for the site, but these are the first “big” things I’m going to tackle.  I want this to be more than just a budget recipe site; I truly want to help people learn and get through these rough financial times because I know how hard struggling to make do with very little can be.  I live it everyday and it’s not fun!  If I can help people who are living the same way create a constant bright spot in their own lives with fantastic food that won’t make you feel guilty because it cost a fortune, then that’s 150% worth taking this little baby of mine to a whole new level.

I look forward to taking you with me on this journey and thank all of you, as always, for your unfailing support & encouragement.  Without you this site would just be another blip in cyberspace.  You guys are what drive me, what make me put on my crazy kitchen sorceress hat and find ways to turn the ordinary into the exceptional (well, you guys and my incessant need to play with my food at 2 a.m.; I have issues).  Thank you for being the most supportive blog readers on the planet!

Now, let’s take 2012 by the horns and make it the best year ever, shall we?  :)
